Constructed in 1969 as a mixed-use, steel reinforced concrete building comprising luxury specialty stores, a first-class hotel, and offices, the building spans an area of 5,230.46 square meters, standing 14 floors above ground and 2 floors below ground, with a total floor area of 51,491.66 square meters.
Known for its distinctive exterior featuring pink and red stripes, the building was affectionately referred to as the 'Battleship Pajamas.'
After 54 years since its completion, due to the aging structure, the building concluded all operations on October 31, 2023.
In November, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department utilized the site as a training ground, with approximately 300 participants engaging in exercises simulating abduction scenarios, hostage situations, as well as drills involving the destruction of walls and doors.
Moving forward, following the second phase of demolition work, the complete takedown is estimated to finish around the summer of 2027.
The company intends to develop a new facility on the vacant lot.
