We here at Patience Realty are no strangers to regional revitalization given one of our parent companies, Patience Capital Group, is singlehandedly attempting to turn Myoko Kogen from what it is today into the next Whistler or Vail.
However, the topic of regional revitalization can come in very different forms, as is the case in Kyushu and semiconductor factories.
Bloomberg Momentum's Haslinda Amin speaking with Toshio Hiroe, President & CEO of ScreenHoldings. Full video embedded below.
With these factories comes well-paid skilled labor from both in and out of Japan as well as increased employment in the secondary firms that support the larger factories.
Eventually, the resulting increased tax revenues can be spent on better social services thereby attracting more people to the area, instigating a virtuous economic cycle.
Better local economics in the region also spell good things for the real estate market too as consumers will be able to afford higher rents and qualify for higher loans for purchase should said virtuous cycle come to fruition.
Below is a 20+ minute Bloomberg Momentum mini documentary that explores the present-day ups and downs of Kyushu’s regional revitalization.
Key Takeaways:
Japan’s Semiconductor Glory Days and Decline: Once commanding 50% of global chip sales, Japan lost its lead to Taiwan and South Korea after the 1990s. Can it reclaim its position?
$67 Billion Gamble for Global Leadership: Japan is launching an ambitious semiconductor revival plan, combining massive government subsidies with private and international partnerships.
Securing the Future Amid Global Uncertainty: Recent chip shortages exposed vulnerabilities in global supply chains, sparking Japan’s urgent push for semiconductor self-reliance.
Racing to the Cutting Edge: Japan’s Rapidus project targets groundbreaking 2-nanometer chip production by 2027, pivotal for AI, electric vehicles, and autonomous technologies.
A Global Alliance: Major players like Taiwan’s TSMC and Japan’s tech unicorn Preferred Networks are spearheading innovation, signaling Japan’s potential to become a top global player again.
Kyushu’s Silicon Valley Transformation: Once a quiet region, Kyushu is becoming a semiconductor powerhouse, fueled by international investments and the rise of new high-tech hubs.
